Thursdays 6:00 - 7:00 pmIn-person and via ZoomCalm Abiding MeditationThis meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do, we release them and maintain our connection to the support.
“From this practice, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity, freedom in the face of circumstances, and ultimately Buddhahood.”
From Meditation for Beginners, by Bokar Rinpoche.

Would you like to know what 19th Century Jacksonville was like? Then plan to stretch your legs in the comfort of morning temperatures at 10am on Historic Jacksonville, Inc.’s guided “Walk through History” tour! Prepare to time travel back to the late 1800s when Jacksonville was the hub of Southern Oregon. Hear how gambling money built a church; how the Civil War ended a successful mercantile partnership; how a saloon housed the county’s first museum; how fire reshaped the town; and how a railroad both destroyed the town and preserved it. These guided walking tours leave from Jacksonville’s New City Hall (the historic Jackson County Courthouse/Jacksonville Museum) at 206 North 5th Street. Tours cover about 1 mile and last about 1 hour. Tours are FREE, but donations are always welcomed—all monies go towards maintaining and preserving historic buildings seen on the tour.
Get a taste of the "old West" and Jacksonville's gold mining days when you step behind the counter of the oldest financial institution in the Pacific Northwest that began as a gold dust office in 1856. The Beekman Bank Museum saw over $40 million in gold cross its counters during the town’s heyday in the late 1800s—the equivalent of over $1 billion today. Interact with costumed docents sharing stories of late 19th Century banking practices, gold shipping, and handshake deals; step behind the counter and peer in drawers containing old checks, stage schedules, and paperwork; enter the vault that stored all those millions in gold! Allow 30 minutes.
A community of performing artists is coming together for a spectacular fundraiser concert to raise money to bring water to 285,000 people in Gaza City as part of an effort to create an Arcata Sister City with Gaza City.
Redwood Peace and Justice Coalition initiated the idea, and musicians and organizers associated with the Creative Sanctuary and Humboldt Rockers break dance crew jumped in to collaborate on what will be a very entertaining evening with diverse acts.
The show will feature local stars from Humboldt Rockers break dance crew, singer/songwriters Ruby Ruth George, Brianna Penner, James Zeller and Katie Belknap (aka the Ponies of Harmony) to guest singers Olivia Obidah, Blaze Bonpane (singer), Ramsey Isaacs (drums), Matt Sent (piano) and Ian Taylor (bass), to guest instrumentalists Jesse Alm on cello and pianist John Wood and more.
There will also be a silent auction. To donate to the silent auction call 707-633-3097 or email redwoodpeaceandjustice@gmail.com

Fire and smoke have become an annual source of concern for Oregonians, especially for those of us living in the Southwest. As wildfire trends become increasingly obvious, questions about their drivers become more urgent. Yet, many factors affect wildfire behavior and impact: forest management, disruptions to fire’s natural role, patterns of development, and, importantly, changes to the climate. What do we know about how wildfires are changing, the causes, and options for climate adaptation?Dr. Chris Adlam, Southwest Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center, will be the featured speaker at the August SOCAN monthly general meeting. Adlam will discuss how climate is influencing fire risk in the region, what climate projections portend for our future, and what steps we can take to minimize the risk.
