Oct 09 Thursday
We are a Zen practice community in the Diamond Sangha lineage founded by Robert Aitken Rōshi. We provide zazen(meditation) instruction, weekly zazen, practice talks, Dharma discussions and more.
Thursdays 6:00 - 7:00 pmIn-person and via ZoomCalm Abiding MeditationThis meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do, we release them and maintain our connection to the support.
“From this practice, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity, freedom in the face of circumstances, and ultimately Buddhahood.”
From Meditation for Beginners, by Bokar Rinpoche.

Maryum McKee brought yellow rose shoots with her on the long journey from Missouri to Oregon in 1853. She planted these on a rude homestead out in the Applegate and neighbors propagated the rose throughout the valley. To commemorate Maryum’s journey, the Jacksonville Museum Quilters handcrafted a quilt in 1984 that is a historical representation of the John McKee family and Maryum’s treasured yellow rose. The Jacksonville Museum Quilters gifted this quilt to the Rogue Valley Genealogical Library in 2015. In this special local history event, Anne Billeter will show how Maryum’s Yellow Rose Quilt reflects a woman’s life and a family’s history. Billeter serves as President of the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society
This program is co-sponsored by the Eagle Point Historical Society and the Eagle Point Branch of Jackson County Library Services thanks in part to an Oregon Heritage grant to the Gold Hill Historical Society. The Eagle Point Branch of JCLS is located at 239 West Main Street in Eagle Point and is open daily except Sundays. For more information contact Shari Lawson 541-261-7756 shari_l@yahoo.com

Beginners as well as those with experience are welcome. In addition to doing exercises in class, we will look at great drawings of the past to discern the elements that make up their beauty. Did you know that most of Jacksonville's National Historic Landmark District is haunted? Join us for a 1-hour guided Haunted History walking tour and experience the spirits that linger in the town’s historic buildings. Our 6pm and 6:30pm Courthouse tour highlights brothels, epidemics and hangings; our 6:15pm Britt Hill tours share stories of murder, arson, saloons, and Chinatown. Both tours have lots of haunted houses. These tours are not your typical “ghost tours” with special effects. They are history tours about real hauntings resulting from past events. The stories come from people who have actually encountered these restless souls. Tours leave from the Jacksonville Visitors Center at the corner of North Oregon and C streets, cover about 1 mile, and last about 1 hour. Tickets are $10, tour size is capped, and reservations are encouraged. Walk ups are accommodated based on space available. For more information and reservations, visit https://www.historicjacksonville.org/haunted-history-tours/.
