Siskiyou Music Project welcomes The Berkeley Choro Ensemble (pronounced “shoro”) for their first Ashland performance. The Berkeley Choro Ensemble is a group of world-class musicians from the SF Bay Area that made its debut in January, 2010, at the Berkeley Public Library. The group celebrates the music, culture and history of Brazil, with a special emphasis on the Choro genre, a style of music which emerged in the 1800’s in Brazil, fusing the music of Brazil’s European immigrants and the native music of Brazil’s indigenous and African-Brazilian population. In particular, the choro sound is somewhat akin to a combination of European classical music, ragtime, and blues. Historically, the choro style influenced Brazil’s most famous classical composer, Heitor Villa Lobos, to compose some of the world’s most hauntingly beautiful music, the Bachianas Brasileiras. Our repertoire also includes samba, bossa nova, jazz, and the music of Northeast Brazil.

The Cal Poly Humboldt Cannabis Studies Program invites the community to a special screening and discussion of the 1987 locally made cult film Ganjasaurus Rex. Ganjasaurus Rex is a low-budget monster movie in which a Godzilla-like creature rises from the ocean to help outlaw cannabis growers take on the government’s Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP). Inspired by real events, the film captures the spirit of the back-to-the-land movement in Humboldt County—depicting how local communities peacefully resisted government efforts to eradicate their cannabis gardens, culture, and way of life.

The screening will feature select clips from the film, followed by a discussion exploring how Ganjasaurus Rex reflects the complex history of cannabis in Humboldt County. The event will also highlight how this ultra-low-budget production—created entirely by local volunteers—made its way into video rental stores nationwide, ultimately earning status as a true cult classic.

Discussion will be led by David Bienenstock, a journalist covering cannabis since 2002 who is best known for his book How to Smoke Pot (Properly), and as co-creator of the VIce show Bong Appetit and the popular podcast Great Moments in Weed History.

As the final production in our American Masters Drama Series, we invite you to embark on a captivating journey with our production of Bus Stop by William Inge, a timeless tale of human connection and unexpected encounters. Set against the backdrop of a remote roadside diner during a snowstorm, this heartwarming play brings together a diverse cast of characters whose lives intersect in remarkable ways. From the charming cowboy with a romantic soul to the spirited young singer dreaming of stardom, each character adds depth and humor to this touching narrative.

Join us for an evening of laughter, love, and life’s unexpected twists with Bus Stop – an unforgettable theatrical experience that will leave you both moved and entertained! This production has a limited two-week engagement.

Nominations are open for the Civic Contribution Award, which will be presented at State of the Community Luncheon this spring. This prestigious award honors a group or individual that has provided exceptional community service or made an important contribution to the Humboldt County community.
