The Siskiyou Chapter looks forward to its first meeting of the year on Sunday, January 11th (next Sunday) in Lidgate Hall. I (Kathleen Pyle, program Chairperson) will present the program, "Three Women in the 'Land of Little Rain'." It's based on last summer's trip to the Owens Valley/Bishop area and my visit to the very small town of Independence, California. In Independence, I heard the stories of three remarkable women who made significant contributions to botany, literature and geology. My program describes the lives and achievements of each woman, set against a backdrop of mountains, ranch land, water wars, indigenous people and mining. Native plants are also part of the story.
The Eureka Chamber Music Series has enjoyed presenting many vocal concerts over the years, often featuring promising young opera singers from the training grounds of San Francisco's impressive opera scene. This season, ECMS presents two singers who are well into brilliant professional careers, mezzo-soprano Laura Krumm and baritone Simon Barrad, joined by the superb collaborative pianist and composer Eric Zivian. They will perform two different sets of repertoire composed expressly for voice and piano, helping us bring the light into the new year with a program titled "Tears of Gold." This will be an exceptional afternoon of music.
Concert organist Damin Spritzer will present a recital at Christ Episcopal Church, at H and 15th Streets in Eureka on Sunday, January 11, at 4:00 p.m. Christ Church, known for its superb pipe organ (built and installed by Kegg Pipe Organ Builders in 2008) and resonant acoustics, continues its tradition of bringing nationally and internationally known concert artists to Eureka. Spritzer’s concert programs offer something for everyone, including favorites of the pipe organ repertoire alongside lesser known and newly discovered gems. Do plan to join in welcoming Damin Spritzer to the North Coast!
