JPR Live Session: Parker Millsap

Ways To Subscribe

Originally from Oklahoma, Parker Millsap has very quickly made a name for himself among the best players and songwriters in his new home of Nashville. He joined us for a remote session to share songs from his new album called Be Here Instead.

Calling it the most fun recording project of his career thus far, Be Here Instead features myriad keyboard sounds and other electronic elements that aren't found on his earlier recordings. He was inspired by simply messing around on an iPad, which opened opened up an entirely new way of crafting songs.

Growing up in a church-going household in Oklahoma, Millsap started singing in what he calls a "very upbeat" musically-inclined Pentacostal church. Once his talent became apparently, he was singing out front and playing guitar as well, influenced by the classic blues and rock records he was listening to at home. His self-titled 2014 release ended up at #1 on the Americana charts, and introduced his rootsy style to the world.

In our session, we talked about growing up surrounded by open skies, beef, and sports, as well as the development of his signature sound over the years since his debut.

As FM Network Program Director and Music Director, Eric oversees many aspects of JPR's broadcast day. He still hosts the occasional Open Air or classical music shift, and is the driving force behind JPR Live Sessions - our popular series of live in-studio music performances and conversations.
