Far Northern California Counties Set To Begin Stage 3 Reopening On Friday

Erik Neumann/JPR

Counties in far Northern California could open more businesses and recreation sites as soon as this Friday, June 12 as part of the state’s third stage of reopening.

Stage 3 of California’s reopening includes sectors like gyms, summer camps and campgrounds. All North State counties have applied for expedited reopening plans.

Counties from Humboldt and Del Norte to Modoc and Lassen have submitted regional variance plans to allow them to move early into parts of California’s Stage 3.

To do so, they have to show low Covid-19 disease transmission and hospitalization numbers, and demonstrate that they have enough hospital capacity.

But the final decision for which specific sectors are ready to reopen is made by a county’s local public health officer.

In Shasta County, many sectors were opened early, starting last weekend. The California Department of Public Health recommended openings starting no sooner than June 12, but campgrounds, fitness centers, hotels and movie theaters are all among the sectors that have since opened, according to the county’s website. State data shows Shasta County has had a total of 44 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic started.

Humboldt County public health is moving slower to reopen sectors. Health officials say they’re hoping to have campgrounds reopen this week. Humboldt has had the highest number of Covid-19 cases among far northern California counties with at least 113 cases since the pandemic began.

Other far Northern California counties have had fewer than 10 confirmed Covid-19 cases. Northeastern Modoc County has had no confirmed cases.
