Big ag in California

Americans are quick to speak up in favor of small family farms and the people who tend them.

But in today's world, those farms are the exception; large-scale industrial agriculture led by corporations is the rule.

Scholars watched from the early 20th century-onward as the Big Ag world took shape, frequently speaking out against it.

The efforts of eight such scholars are detailed in the book In the Struggle: Scholars and the Fight against Industrial Agribusiness in California.

Co-authors Daniel J. O'Connell and Scott J. Peters visit the Jefferson Exchange to outline the story of the long and still-active struggle.
