"We stayed together for the children," many a partner to a rocky marriage has confessed. And once the children are grown and gone?

That's when the divorce happens; divorces for marriage partners age 50 and up have risen sharply in recent decades. And the event often bewilders adult children, who don't quite know how to respond.

That's the story told in the book Home Will Never Be the Same Again: A Guide for Adult Children of Gray Divorce. Carol Hughes and Bruce Fredenburg have counseled adult children in their therapy practices.

They share some of what they've learned in the book, and visit the JX to talk about it.
