Regional Blood Bank Says Supply Is Critically Low

Citing a less than 24-hour supply in their inventory, Bloodworks Northwest has declared a “Code Red” alert.

Administrators are urging people to visit their website to sign up for blood donation, adding that types O and A are in critically short supply. They also say there’s no waiting period to give blood after getting a COVID-19 shot, and add that the rate of no-shows is at its worst since the pandemic began.

A Bloodworks administrator says they’re advising hospitals in Oregon and Washington to conserve blood, as daily needs have been 10 to 18 percent above average.

Because of the pandemic, drop-ins aren’t possible, but same-day appointments are. All blood donation sites observe COVID-19 protocols.
