Historic Osborne Lookout Photos: Historic Photos & Landscape Change in the Applegate Watershed An online presentation by Luke Ruediger October 19, 6:00 PM A historic Osborne lookout photo taken from Anderson Butte in the 1930s looking west down the Deming Gulch watershed to Sterling Creek. This presentation will explore the historic Osborne Lookout photographs taken in the 1930s from fire lookouts across the West, including the Applegate Watershed. These photographs provide a glimpse into the historic landscapes of our region and the changes in vegetation that have occurred from approximately 90 years of logging, grazing, road construction and fire suppression. We will compare historic conditions to those in contemporary landscapes by viewing historic photographs and modern day retakes. The presentation will focus on analyzing landscape change, fire regimes, vegetation patterning, and habitat conditions in both the historical and contemporary context. Don't miss this interesting and informative presentation focused on the forests and vegetation of the Applegate Watershed and the Siskiyou Crest. Luke Ruediger: Luke Ruediger is a naturalist, author, ecologist, environmental advocate and life long SW Oregon resident. He is currently the Executive Director for the Applegate Neighborhood Network (ANN) and the Conservation Director for the Siskiyou Field Office of the Klamath Forest Alliance. He also runs the Klamath-Siskiyou Fire Reports Program documenting fire effects and fire suppression impacts in the local bio-region. In 2013 he also published "The Siskiyou Crest: Hikes, History & Ecology," a hiking and natural history guide for the Siskiyou Crest region.
