Novelist captures life in a very repressive Romania

Imaginary people in real circumstances, that's the domain of historical fiction. It is a domain frequently inhabited by Ruta Sepetys, who has written a handful of books now published in 40 different languages.

Her latest work, I Must Betray You, brings readers to Romania under communist rule, in the brutal dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu. The central character is a 17-year-old boy who is blackmailed by the regime into becoming an informant.

The book title indicates his charge, but not necessarily how he responded. After all, Ceausescu was overthrown not long after.

The author joins us with a sketch of the book and details about the dismantling of a repressive government.
