The Invincible Gay Warriors Of Ancient Greece

The Sacred Band
The Sacred Band

History from more than 2,000 years ago comes to us in fragments. The fragments are even more scattered when people in more recent times do not share their findings.

Such is the story of the warriors from Thebes who fought for decades to preserve the freedom of their people. The squadron consisted of 150 pairs of male lovers, producing some uneasiness in historians about relating the story.

Some details of it are told for the first time by James Romm, author ofThe Sacred Band: Three Hundred Theban Lovers Fighting to Save Greek Freedom.

When the Sacred Band fell at last in battle, Greek freedom was extinguished for two millennia.

James Romm visits to tell the tale.
