In Praise Of Hummingbirds, And Their Niches

A hummingbird
_

It buzzes like a bee, but it acts like a bird: there is nothing quite like the sight and sound of a hummingbird.

The speedy little birds are not only unusual in how they move (and how fast) relative to other birds, they are striking to see while motionless. The shiny feathers reflect light like metal or jewels.

Now consider the needs of hummingbirds, and how the environment might provide for them. It's a tricky situation in a world of diminishing habitat and climate change. Nature writer Jon Dunn shows just how tricky, in his book The Glitter in the Green: In Search of Hummingbirds.

The author chats about challenges to hummingbirds, and how we might lessen them.
