Mt McLoughlin rises in the distance beyond Lake of the Woods in a view from the YMCA camp.

A Girl Scout camp that had enriched the lives of generations of girls across the region shut down on the shores of Lake of The Woods in the Cascades in 2012. The camp had fallen into disrepair over the years, and the reluctant shutdown put its future very much in doubt.

Enter the DeBoer family of the Lithia Motors dealerships. Sid and Karen DeBoer not only bought the shuttered camp, they donated it to the Ashland Family YMCA and gave a pile of money for its renewal.

That is the story told in this month's Stories of Southern Oregon, compiled by Maureen Flanagan Battistella. Maureen returns, bringing the YMCA's CEO, Dan Crocker, and camp Project Manager Lisa Molnar.
