The shot was supposed to help, just a simple steroid injection to ease lower back pain. But the patient got sick, and got sick weirdly: a fungal form of meningitis.

The disease investigators got to work, and found a culprit, the business that made the steroids for the injections. It ended up being a much bigger story, and now a book called Kill Shot: A Shadow Industry, a Deadly Disease.

Investigative report Jason Dearen put several years into his research into the New England Compounding Center, finding shockingly shoddy practices and sanitation at the center. The author tells the major points of the story in this interview.
