The late investigative journalist Les Payne set himself a gargantuan task three decades ago: set the record straight on Malcolm X. The task outlived Payne, who died nearly three years ago.

His daughter and principal researcher, Tamara Payne, picked up the project and carried it across the finish line, publishing The Dead Are Arising: The Life of Malcolm X last October.

Tamara Payne is our guest in this month's edition of The Keenest Observers, with host Rob Goodwin. We learn some of the finer points of Malcolm X, what drove him, and how previous coverage got his story wrong.
