Oregon got a brand-new secretary of state with November's election. It might have been hard to notice, with the heat of the presidential race and its long run to a final act.
But Democrat Shemia Fagan, until now a state senator, won the seat occupied by Bev Clarno, who was appointed to succeed Dennis Richardson, who died in office. Fagan has a long list of responsibilities now, including overseeing elections and managing audits of state agencies and processes.
The job is not only frequently in the news, it is next in line to the governor's office... if the governor leaves--and the last one did--the secretary of state moves up. Shemia Fagan takes some time out of busy first week on the job to visit the JX.
