Many of us remember the date of the Pearl Harbor attack easily. It helps that FDR spelled it out in his speech to Congress: "Yesterday, December 7th, 1941..."
But our engagement with Japanese forces did not commence upon that very date. A set of American planes and pilots stationed in China quietly took on Japanese forces long before Pearl Harbor.
That's the story Sam Kleiner tells in his book The Flying Tigers: The Untold Story of the American Pilots Who Waged a Secret War Against Japan. We catch up on the details of the campaign and the campaigners in this interview from 2018.
