Eviction Ban Endings Loom; Rent Relief Available

Public Domain

Both of our states gave renters relief from eviction, buffering them from being tossed out of their homes because of the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.

California's legislature is under greater pressure, because if no extension is made, mass evictions would happen on Tuesday, September 1st. A bill to extend the eviction moratorium was expected to pass on the final day of the legislature, August 31st.

But the end is in sight for Oregon, too, and soon: September 30th. And governments and organizations big and small are scrambling to get rent money into the hands of people who need it most.

Access, Inc. in Jackson County has a number of programs available. And the Community Alliance of Tenants also presents some options. Melanie Mosher from Access and Coya Crespin from CAT visit.

Note: on Monday, August 31st, Oregon Governor Kate Brown extended the moratorium on foreclosures of owned property. This does not affect renters, but Brown says she is exploring ways to extend the eviction moratorium as well.
