Black Southern Oregonians do not always feel welcome in a community so heavily white (and less than 2% Black). So they create community structures where they can meet and get to know other people of color.
Southern Oregon BASE (Black Alliance and Social Empowerment) already organizes events for adults. Now it is expanding into programs for children, including Afro Scouts, meeting for the first time this coming weekend (August 22nd).

One of their efforts is a meeting with the police chiefs of Medford, Ashland, and Central Point, plus the Jackson County Sheriff, scheduled for early September.
