Exchange Exemplar: The Argument Against Solitary

Josh Estey
/
AusAID

"Lock them up and throw away the key." An old sentiment, still felt today by people fed up with crime.

That actual practice is not legal, but separating inmates from other people and keeping them separate for at least a time is allowed. Psychiatrist Terry Allen Kupers from the Bay Area does not think much of it, and says why, in his book Solitary: The Inside Story of Supermax Isolation and How We Can Abolish It.

Dr. Kupers visited us to talk about the situation in 2017, and we return to the interview here.
