Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival

Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival announces its 15th Season

The Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival announces its 15th season with a series of community concerts featuring classical and contemporary music for piano, strings, and clarinet.

The festival will once again bring world-class musicians from around the United States together for a residency and series of community concerts in Trinity and Humboldt Counties. The festival will produce a weekend of shows in Trinity County on June 18 – 20, and will perform in Humboldt County at the Arcata Playhouse on Friday, August 22.

The concerts will feature some of the most famous and moving works of classical chamber music, including Johannes Brahms' powerful, transcendent, and intense Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34. “Brahms' Piano Quintet is quite possibly the culmination of classical chamber music – the peak of the mountain when it comes to craft, energy, expression, and lyricism,” says festival director Ian Scarfe, “This is a piece that is consistently a favorite of both musicians and audiences alike, and it has a thrilling ending that sounds like pure rock and roll!”

They will also perform the first published work by Beethoven, the Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 1. “This is a piece that Beethoven used to make a statement,” says Scarfe, “Beethoven knew that he wanted to shake up the traditions in the musical world at the end of the 1700s. His musical style took the elegance and melodic natures of the classical era, and gave them a strong dose of drama, pulse-pounding energy, and even violence at times. This piece is amazing, because it shows that even at the very beginning, Beethoven's music was utterly unique and exciting.”

Other works on the programs include works with clarinet by Mozart and Poulenc, string works by Caroline Shaw and Martinu, and other surprising tidbits by modern composers Philip Glass and the English band Radiohead.

All concerts are open to the public, and instead of set ticket prices, music lovers are invited to contribute on a sliding scale, “pay what you can” basis. All who love music and support this kind of community organization are encouraged to make a donation to support this festival – tax-deductible charity contributions can be made through the website www.TrinityAlpsCMF.org.
