Mark Rothko, the master of abstract expressionism, is working on the largest commission in the history of modern art: a large group of murals for The Four Seasons restaurant in New York. But as he and his young assistant Ken take on the project, Rothko wrestles with his legacy and what it means to be successful during your own lifetime. Is he selling out by taking corporate money? Would it be better to die before lingering too long? Emotions and paint fly in this intense portrait of a master at the height of his power.
