Stockton's former mayor tells the story of a hard path to leadership

26 years old, and the mayor of California's 11th-largest city. Michael Tubbs became a national news story when he was elected the mayor of Stockton in 2016.

He got there the long way, a story he was reluctant to tell for a time. But he tells the full story of his family's poverty, his incarcerated father, the "badass women" in his life, and living something of a split personality--good student vs streetwise guy--in the book The Deeper the Roots: A Memoir of Hope and Home.

We bring the story up to the present day; Michael Tubbs lost a reelection bid last year.
