This summer's continuing pandemic put the kibosh on a lot of vacations, but there are still places to go that will not put you in the presence of many other people.

John Soares, who grew up in Redding and has authored several hiking guidebooks, has some ideas for people willing to get far from a motel. His latest book is Camp for Free: Dispersed Camping & Boondocking on America’s Public Lands.

You read the title correctly; Soares points out that there are plenty of dispersed camping sites on public lands that will not cost you a dime to stay the night. The author visits with details.
