Breaking The Silence: Talking About Suicide

One of the issues with suicide in society is that people are reluctant to talk about it.

News media have traditionally played a role by generally not covering suicides.  Which makes some sense in individual cases, but potentially adds to the squelching of suicide as an important discussion topic.

Media outlets around Oregon join forces April 7 to 14 in a campaign called "Breaking the Silence."  JPR reached out to NAMI Southern Oregon, NAMI being the National Alliance on Mental Illness.  NAMI's "Ending the Silence" program also encourages people to talk about suicide, especially if they are feeling like suicide is an option for them.  Emily Perkins and Lezley Sanders of NAMI visit.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
