As It Was: Medford Boy Grooms Himself for Aviation Career

Born in Port Angeles, Wash., in 1946, Bill Warren grew accustomed to airplanes flying over his family farm beneath the flight path of the local airport.  When he was eight, the family moved to Medford, Ore., where Warren soon became a fixture at the airport.  Warren held the controls of an airplane for the first time at age 10, and by 15 he had earned his private pilot certificate.  He was headed for a career in aviation.

Warren owned many airplanes, but his favorite was a 1946 Taylorcraft named “Simply Magic” that he said made a pilot be a pilot.

In the 1980s, Bill formed a flying circus that traveled the country.  He designed and performed new aerobatic maneuvers, and formed the “Daring Damsels” act featuring two women wing-walkers.  He did stunt flying for a Kevin Costner movie titled “Fandango.”

Besides training new pilots and testing pilots for certification, he flew for Mercy Flights, did crop dusting, provided support for wildfire suppression, dispersed fog, and shuttled planes.
