Oregon Republican gubernatorial candidate Dr. Bud Pierce publicly apologized Wednesday for saying that educated women are less “susceptible” to domestic violence.

The apology was delivered on Facebook Live from the candidate’s home in Salem. In the 3-minute video Pierce is surrounded by women, including his wife, Selma Pierce.

The candidate called his statement “ignorant and potentially dangerous” and said he has since been educating himself about domestic violence.

Pierce continued: “I especially wish to apologize to all of the victims of domestic violence, upon whom my statement may have brought back the painful memories of their abuse, and the reality that many in our society do not understand their plight.”
