California Governor Signs Gun Control Laws

California Governor Jerry Brown acted on a range of gun bills today (Friday).

He signed a bill to ban high capacity magazine conversion kits and vetoed another which would have given Oakland the right to enact gun regulations stricter than the state’s.

Brown signed the ban on “conversion kits,” which backers said were being used to circumvent the state’s assault weapons ban. Assembly member Nancy Skinner authored the legislation.

GUNBILLS1A / Skinner: “In almost every single mass shooting circumstance, either an assault weapon, or one that’s been modified to work like one is used.” (:09)

Sam Peredes (puh-RED-es) with Gun Owners of California says this and other recent legislation infringes on the rights of gun owners.

GUNBILLS1B / Paredes: “We know that the people who are fervently working to pass all these bills, their goal is to ban the private possession of firearms.”(:06)

Meanwhile, the Governor vetoed Senate Leader Darrel Steinberg’s bill that would have banned weapons with detachable magazines.

And he signed legislation that extends from six months to five years the ban on gun possession for a person who tells a mental health professional of the intention to harm someone.
