Timbers Fans Say Chant Objectifies Women

Some fans of Portland's Major League Soccer team, the Timbers, want the team to change one of the home-field chants, claiming a verse objectifies women. Many fans remain quiet in protest during the verse: "Portland Boys, We are Here;" "Shag your women, drink your beer!"

The Oregonian reports the team adopted the chant  before it made the move to MLS in 2011. "Portland Boys" is based on similar chants used by some English Premier League teams. Versions of the song have been adopted by other MLS teams including the Seattle Sounders. Timbers fan Nicky Wiesenfeld recently wrote an op ed for the Timbers Army website calling for the team to change or eliminate the chant.

Some fans have argued it is clear the verse is not meant to be taken seriously.
