Eagle Point School District Wants Local Control Over Mask Mandate

A small school district in Southern Oregon has written a letter to Governor Kate Brown asking to have control over mask mandates handed back down to local officials.

In July, Governor Kate Brown issued a mask mandate for all students and staff at K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. Now, the Eagle Point School District is asking for control to be handed back to them. In a letter released on August 13th, the school district did not take a stance on the mask mandate and says that it will work with Jackson county health officials to determine a way forward.

Dean MacInnis is with the Eagle Point School District. He acknowledges that the school district has come under pressure from parents who say that they will not let their kids return to school if there is a mask mandate.

“That's really hard because we gotta keep the students who are coming to school safe and at the same time we don't want to be losing students who would benefit by being in person,” says MacInnis.

Hospitals in Jackson county are overwhelmed with serious COVID cases and are being forced to postpone treatments that people need for other diseases and emergencies.
