UPDATE: Friday, Oct. 2, 1:00 p.m. ...

At a briefing at 11:00 a.m., Cal Fire officials said good progress continues to be made on containing the Zogg Fire. Crews have been taking advantage of a smoke inversion, which dampens fire activity, to strengthen control lines and work directly on the face of the fire.

Per Cal Fire morning update: Firefighters had a very successful night that increased containment of the fire with minimal growth.

Crews completed firing along critical areas of the fire line. The fire continues to burn in grass, oak woodland, chaparral and mixed timber.

Hot, dry conditions, with low humidity are forecasted again for
today with a northwest wind developing across the area this evening.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Sept. 30, 4:00 p.m. ...

Officials on the Zogg Fire reported Wednesday that a person who had been severely burned as the fire initially spread on Sunday had died in the hospital from their injuries. The victim was not identified and no further information was available. That raises the death toll from this fire to four.

On the fire today, moderating weather and a smoke inversion have helped slow the fire, which is burning in Shasta County, southwest of Redding.

At a briefing on Wednesday, Cal Fire Operations Chief Chris Waters said the east side of the fire — and the west side from the Tehama County line to Platina Road — are in mop-up and patrol mode. That means crews are dousing isolated pockets of flame and watching to make sure new fires don't start up again.

Waters said the fire remained most active on the northwest side, and that crews were building contingency lines to the north and northwest in case the fire made a run in that direction, toward Trinity County. Some of that area is in the burn scar of the 2018 Carr Fire.

Incident Commander Sean Kavanaugh said the fire was seven percent contained.

"Those are those areas we're confident we can walk away from and not have any issues, any flare-ups coming back."

Kavanaugh said he expected containment to increase steadily going forward. He also said more crews and equipment were arriving daily to help in the firefighting effort.

Shasta County Sheriff Eric Magrini said all evacuations were still in place.

"We know that's difficult for residents, that's inconvenient," he said. "Some people say, 'Well, the fire's burned through. Why can't we come back? Why can't we inspect our properties? It still has not been made safe."

For example, Magrini said, two of his deputies had barely avoided injury when a burned tree fell on their patrol car, totaling it.

The Sheriff also appealed to the public to rely on official sources of information about the fire, and the investigation into the fire's cause.

"There's been a lot of speculation, a lot of rumors. Our office has received several reports of a lot of misinformation that's out there," he said. "There have been no arrests made, and I want to reiterate that: There are no arrests made in this. this is still an active, preliminary investigation that takes lots of time because we want to do it right."

UPDATE: Tuesday, Sept. 29, 7:00 p.m. ...

The Zogg Fire fire continues to burn in grass, oak woodland, chaparral and mixed timber in Shasta County, about 12 miles southwest of Redding .

Cal Fire says firefighters are working aggressively in steep and rugged terrain, trying to build containment lines on the fire perimeter. Numerous firefighting air tankers from throughout the state are flying fire suppression missions as conditions allow.

Weather continues to challenge firefighters with hot and dry conditions that occurred across the fire today. Temperatures climbed into the 90s. Winds were generally light. For tonight, light winds are forecast, with continued low relative humidity.

In a media briefing this morning, Incident Commander Sean Kavanaugh said a damage assessment was ongoing. He stressed that most of the 148 structures found to be destroyed by the fire so far were sheds, barns and other non-residential buildings.

Kananaugh also noted that as the Zogg Fire grew, it became a higher priority fire, making more crews, equipment and aircraft were available. Currently, the incident is staff by nearly 1,000 personnel and is equipped with 117 engines, seven helicopters and 36 bulldozers. More resources are expected to be sent to the fire in the coming days.

UPDATE: Monday, Sept. 28, 5:00 p.m. ...

At a media briefing this afternoon, Shasta County Sheriff Eric Magrini announced that three people had died in the fast-moving Zogg Fire. He said no information about identity or location of the dead would be released until the remains had been identified and next of kin were notified.

Magrini also strongly urged residents of the areas under evacuation orders to leave and stay away from the area.

"When you hear that order," he said. "evacuate immediately. We don't want to have to come in and try to rescue somebody who stayed to try to protect their property, because then you're creating additional burdens for both firefighters and law enforcement."

Magrini said deputies were patrolling the area to prevent looting of evacuated neighborhoods and that no attempted looting had occurred yet.

Calfire Battalion Chief Chris Waters described the fire as moving quickly in grass and brush, throwing embers as far as a mile, igniting spot fires in front of the leading edge.

"The key word here is high intensity fire behavior on all sides of the fire," Waters said. "Until the Red Flag Warning and these winds start to dissipate, we're not going to be able to make a lot to headway on suppression efforts, other than around the communities and subdivisions."

Calfire reports that 1,538 structures are threatened by the Zogg Fire and 146 have been destroyed.
