- In Oregon’s 2nd House District, former state senator Cliff Bentz will be the Republican running to replace retiring 11-term incumbent Greg Walden. Bentz handily defeated Knute Buehler, Jason Atkinson, Jimmy Crumpacker and seven other candidates for the Republican nod. On the Democratic side, Alex Spenser edged out Nick L. Heuertz, 32 to 31 percent, for the right to run against Bentz in Oregon’s largest congressional district.
- In Oregon’s 4th House District, Alek Skarlatos cruised to the Republican nomination with 87 percent of the vote to Nelson Ijih’s 13 percent. Political neophyte Skarlatos will try to unseat Oregon’s longest-serving House member, 17-term incumbent Peter Defazio.
- Democrat Terrie Martin will square off against Republican Dave Dotterer for the Jackson County Commission Positon 2 seat being vacated by Republican Bob Strosser, who chose not to run for re-election. Martin won 85 percent of the vote against fellow Democrat Robert H. Bierma. Dotterer got 72 percent against Republicans Curt Ankerberg and Curtis Sather.
- Jackson County Sheriff Nate Sickler’s effort to persuade voters to pay for a new, larger jail went down in flames, 71 to 29 percent.
- In Ashland, voters shot down an $8.2 million bond measure by more than a 2-1 margin. The money would have been used to upgrade City Hall and two other municipal buildings. At the same time, they approved -- 64 to 36 percent -- a measure to create a city manager position and to transfer executive management duties from the mayor to the new city manager.
