Almost 49 million Americans will be on the road this Fourth of July holiday — a new record according to AAA.
Almost 6 million Californians will be among those traveling 50 miles or more from Wednesday, July 3, to Sunday, July 7.
Eight percent of people in California will hit the road in their RV or car, 13 percent will fly to their destinations, and the rest will board a train, bus or a cruise ship.
Among the places most likely to be visited are Anaheim, San Francisco and Las Vegas.
Lorenzo Muslia with Andis Wines in Amador County says the area’s 60 wineries expect it to be one of the busiest times of the year.
“It’s definitely not a one-day trip if you want to hit some of those wineries, so that’s why people have that tendency to stay for longer days, about a two to three-day weekend,” he said.
Muslia says most visitors will come from the Central Valley, but he’s also expecting visitors from the Bay Area and as far away as Northern Nevada.
Gas prices have dropped over the past few weeks to about the same level at this time last year, according to AAA, but on Monday California's gas tax will go up nearly 6 cents a gallon. The increase will make California's gas tax the highest in the nation.
