Oregon Democrats Push Rent Control

OPB

Democratic legislative leaders are pushing a measure that could make Oregon the first state in the nation to adopt statewide rent control.

Speaking at a committee hearing today/Monday, Senate Majority Leader Ginny Burdick said it’s time the state did more to protect tenants.

Burdick: “I speak as a tenant advocate today but also as a landlord. I’ve been a landlord for 35 years, I’m here to tell you there is nothing in this bill that will hurt a responsible landlord.”

The bill would prohibit landlords from raising rent more than seven percent plus cost of living annually. It would also ban “no cause” evictions.

Democratic leaders said they expect the bill will pass out of the Legislature quickly.
