The major fires in Northern California presented mixed news on Wednesday. People are being allowed to return to more neighborhoods in the Redding area, but the toll of lost houses keeps climbing.Carr Fire
Fire officials lifted some evacuation orders Wednesday.
Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenkoannounced Wednesday afternoon that the last person reported missing in the aftermath of the Carr fire -- Bruce Brown of Old Shasta-- has been located, and is safe. Of the 20 people reported missing as of Monday, all have now been accounted for.
The Carr Fire near Redding has reached 121,000 acres and is just 35 percent contained. It has torn through Shasta County since July 23, killed six people and destroyed over 1,000 homes. It first flared up from what officials reported as a "mechanical failure of vehicle" on California Highway 299. More than 4,000 fire personnel are battling the flames.
Firefighters are focused on the northwest end of the Carr Fire, particularly on the Shasta-Trinity county lines. Crews are mopping up burned areas on the southern end of the fire. The fire is progressing into the town of Lewiston, Cal Fire spokesman Gabe Lauderdale said in a press video Wednesday morning.
Mendocino Complex Fire
The two Mendocino Complex fires cover 95,000 acres in Mendocino and Lake counties. They are 24 percent contained. 14 homes have been destroyed and another 12,000 are threatened.
Fire officials say they made great strides on containment Tuesday night. The weather isn't helping: low humidity, winds, and dry conditions are challenging firefighting efforts.
