James Manning was sworn in Friday as Oregon State Senator for District 7. Manning was appointed by the Lane County Board of Commissioners to fill the seat vacated by Chris Edwards.
Manning was joined by family and friends and elected officials at a morning ceremony at Harris Hall in Eugene. The former Army drill sergeant says he’s honored to serve his district which includes much of Eugene and Junction City. Manning has some priorities as he heads to Salem.
Manning: “Housing is a big thing. Education is a big thing. Jobs. I think, not necessarily in that order, but education has always been a top of my priorities I believe that that is the great equalizer in society.”
Manning has served on Eugene’s Bethel School Board and the Eugene Water and Electric Board. The Democrat will be Lane County’s first black legislator. He will serve the last 2 years of Chris Edward’s Senate term. Edwards has taken a job with the University of Oregon.
