Public employee unions this week revealed they have put $3.9 million into their campaign to increase corporate taxes in Oregon.
The big contributions narrowed the money advantage held by opponents of Measure 97.
The Service Employees International Union and the Oregon Education Association provided almost all of the new money. The unions represent most of the teachers in the state and much of the state’s workforce.
Measure 97 would impose a 2.5 percent tax on sales by corporations with more than $25 million in annual sales in the state.
Business interests from around the country report raising more than $18 million to fight the initiative.
They say Measure 97 will raise prices and hurt the economy. Supporters have raised more than $12 million, almost all from unions.
They say the measure will provide needed help for schools and other services.
