Oregon lawmakers adjourned the 2015 legislative session Monday night. House Speaker Tina Kotek let the gavel fall in unison with her Senate counterpart -- just like every year.
“The 2015 regular session of the regular legislative session is adjourned, sine die,” she said.
Sine die, Latin for “without day,” means the current legislature has adjourned with no scheduled day to meet again.
It meant the end of a big year for Oregon’s statehouse. In February, Governor John Kitzhaber resigned just four weeks into his term. Kate Brown was sworn in and the Legislature kept moving.
Lawmakers passed a statewide sick leave law and a requirement for background checks in private gun sales. They greeted the start of legal pot by moving retail sales up to October 1.
The Legislature did not act on some top priorities of the Democratic majority. A bill to raise the minimum wage stalled. And a transportation package failed because of a provision that would have repealed the state’s new low-carbon fuel standard.
