How do people choose which city or state to call home?

A new study by shows that Oregon is an average place to live in terms of resident satisfaction. The survey asked more than 18,000 people how they decided where to live.

Andrew Tam with the website said that renters are a large and mobile demographic who are able to "vote with their feet." He continued, "there's a hundred and five million renters in the U.S. overall and renters are not only a large demographic but also a highly mobile demographic."

Oregon scored an A for quality of schools, safety and crime. However it received a D for satisfaction with daily commutes. The state received a C plus grade overall.

Portland got an overall score of B plus. It got an A minus for safety and crime but a D in plans for home ownership.

Idaho and Colorado were among the highest ranked states while Eastern seaboard states scored the lowest, especially in New England. The full report will be released on Thursday.
