Oregon's Economy Is 'Close To Full-Throttle'

Oregon's economy is "close to full-throttle," according to the state.

"Job growth today is about as strong as it ever gets in the state of Oregon, adding about 50,000 to 55,000 jobs over the most recent year," said Josh Lehner of the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis.

That's about the same number of jobs that were added during the booming tech years of the 1990s.

Oregon's unemployment rate has dropped to 5.8 percent. It doesn't tend to go much lower than 5 percent because many people move here without work.

Lehner said fewer people moved to Oregon during the recession because people were trapped in homes with large mortgages.

"However, as the economy has improved, people are starting to move again and they're starting to move to Oregon," he said. "In particular, a place like Bend was among the fastest growing population-wise last year, according to numbers from the Census Bureau."

As states report better economies, pressure builds on the federal reserve to increase interest rates and slow growth.
