Half Dozen 3.0 And Higher Magnitude Eartquakes Shake Southern Oregon

A number of earthquakes shook southern Oregon and northwestern Nevada early Thursday, six of which had a magnitude greater than 3.

"They've pretty much died down, but then there's one moderate-sized one every couple of days," said Ian Madin, chief scientist for the Department of Geology and Mineral Studies. "They still remain complete enigmatic."

The very active area has been closely monitored by scientists since mid-July 2014. Madin said the region has recorded more than 3,000 since last summer.

Many of the quakes have been small, but in November, the region experienced a 4.6 magnitude earthquake, causing further rumblings for Lakeview, Oregon residents.

The small earthquakes don't necessarily spell a larger, more destructive earthquake in the near future, but residents should take the opportunity to prepare.

"It's a good reminder that Oregon is earthquake country," said Madin. "People should prepare for an earthquake, but then they should get on with their lives."

DOGAMI, the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington, and the U.S. Geological Survey are monitoring the activity.
