Number Of Uninsured Oregonians Falls By 63 Percent

The number of Oregonians without health insurance dropped 63 percent in a year, according to a new study by .

In the summer of 2013, more than half a million Oregonians didn't have health insurance. By this summer -- after the state expanded Medicaid and after people were allowed to enroll under the Affordable Care Act -- that number dropped to just over 200,000.

So in effect, the number of uninsured Oregonians went from 14 percent of the population to five percent.

Peter Graven of OHSU says is as if the entire populations of Eugene, Salem and Lake Oswego all got health insurance, "Should we be surprised that a health insurance policy that was designed to provide insurance to people did this? No," he said.

"But it's reassuring that you can see it in the numbers that it actually happened. You know, especially given all the perceived difficulties with the website,' Graven said.

The work of the is being transferred to the feds. It has to be finished by November 15 when a new enrollment window will open.
