Calls For End To Cover Oregon Increase

The speaker of the Oregon House added her voice Monday to calls for Cover Oregon to close its doors and hand its functions over to the state.

Portland Democrat Tina Kotek says Oregon's troubled health insurance marketplace should shut down.

"We are beyond frustrated," said Kotek. "It's time for a change and Cover Oregon has no public confidence, no confidence from the legislature and we need to move on to putting more public oversight of the functions of the health insurance exchange."

Kotek also called for more help for Oregonians who were affected financially by Cover Oregon’s errors.

Last week, Governor Kitzhaber said that given technical and management problems at Cover Oregon, moving its remaining functions to existing state agencies offers the lowest-risk path.

Then late Friday Senate President Peter Courtney said he'll unveil legislation to dissolve the health exchange.

Last week, the Cover Oregon board delayed any decision on the organization's governance.
