UO Limits Student-Teacher Relationships

University of Oregon is one of Oregon's public universities involved in contract negotiations with classified employees.

In this time of greater awareness about power dynamics, the University of Oregon Senate passed a policy Wednesday that limits student-teacher relationships. The goal is “to foster a learning environment characterized by professional behavior and fair and impartial treatment.”

The main feature of the policy eliminates relationships that have a conflict of interest, such as those between UO employees who might be in direct supervision over a student. Exceptions include pre-existing relationships which must be disclosed promptly.

The Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity will investigate all reports of violations. Faculty and staff who violate the policy could be dismissed.

For the last year, a temporary policy was in effect.
