No Logging In Store For Mildred Kanipe Park

nrttoday.com

There won't be any logging in Douglas County's *Mildred Kanipe (Can-ipe) Park, for now. County Commissioners decided to defer a proposed harvesting plan until all other options have been exhausted.

Douglas County assumed responsibilities for managing the 11-hundred acre plot of land in 2012. The County didn't want to use any of its general funds to develop it into a sustaining campsite. It proposed logging a 20-acre portion to pay for the changes. Douglas County Commissioner Doug Robertson says the group "Friends of Mildred Kanipe Park" offered to raise the funds themselves.

Robertson: "And hopefully they are successful and we can go forward and build the park and not log."

Robertson says the Friends have raised $27,000.

Robertson: "It really is the beginning, not the end of the partnership in working together because we have other issues at Kanipe Park; invasive weeds, hawthorn, poison oak, berries. I think it's an opportunity for a partnership that's going to benefit the park and the users."

Friends of Mildred Kanipe Park will have to raise $65,000 by the end of the summer. A formal contract is expected to be signed with the county within 30 days.
