One of the biggest celebrations of Chinese New Year in the region comes in the small historic mining town of Jacksonville, once the Jackson County seat.
Why this neck of the woods? Because in its gold mining and county-seat heyday, Jacksonville was home to a thriving community of Chinese immigrants. By and large, they went back to China when the boom years ended, after persecution and even legislation against them.
