The recent renaming of a state park in Humboldt County to Sue-Meg State Park is just one step of many.
Elsewhere around the region and around the country, place names deemed insensitive or outright offensive are being peeled off in favor of names by or about indigenous people. And it goes beyond place names; for example: arrow tips once known as "Gunther Barbs" are now called "Tolowot Points."
This is the subject matter of this month's edition of Underground History, produced by Chelsea Rose at the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology.
