Underground History: Renaming places and things

The recent renaming of a state park in Humboldt County to Sue-Meg State Park is just one step of many.

Elsewhere around the region and around the country, place names deemed insensitive or outright offensive are being peeled off in favor of names by or about indigenous people. And it goes beyond place names; for example: arrow tips once known as "Gunther Barbs" are now called "Tolowot Points."

This is the subject matter of this month's edition of Underground History, produced by Chelsea Rose at the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology.

This month Chelsea brings in Frankie Myers, Vice Chair of the Yurok Tribe, to talk about the process of honoring, rather than denigrating, groups of people through naming conventions.
