The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Captured In Photographs

Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 audio

Details of the Tulsa race massacre of 1921 were so well hidden, even people who LIVED in Tulsa did not know the story. But times change and curiosity lingers, and as the 100th anniversary approaches (May 31st), the world knows much more about white police and mobs attacking and burning Greenwood, America's "Black Wall Street" in Tulsa.

Photographs of the massacre are actually plentiful, if often hideous to look at. Karlos K. Hill, a scholar of lynching and racial violence at the University of Oklahoma, selected some of the most evocative pictures for the book The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre: A Photographic History.

We hear details of what happened that day, as contained in the photos and accounts of survivors.
