You know how dogs can hear sounds too high-pitched for humans to hear? It works in the other direction, too... dogs and some other animals can hear the sounds made by the low, rumbling movements of the Earth.
With the right equipment, we can too, and Ben Holtzman uses a LOT of that equipment in his work at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. He's been recording the sounds of earthquakes for years, and he shares them tomorrow (May 11) in a Geology Series lecture--online--from Southwestern Oregon Community College.
We get a preview that is truly Earth-shaking.
